Daisy Hicks releases new music

“I Choose You and Upside represent a very big moment in Daisy Hicks’ recording career and the first pair of major crossover jazz hits for any international artist in well over a decade and in my opinion have elevated Hicks into the big leagues with zeal.”

– No Depression – The Journal of Roots Music

While a lot of us don’t take the time to really think about it, those of us who truly appreciate music and all of the little, subdued nuances that turn a song into a celebration of life know that having a great set of lyrics can completely change the dynamics and emotional direction of any track, no matter how committed to major or minor keys it may be. English soul singer/songwriter Daisy Hicks is a prime example of an artist who knows how to balance lyrical expressions with musical ones, as she so brilliantly highlights in her singles “I Choose You” and “Upside,” which have both become major international hits in the last year. One thing that Hicks has down better than anyone else is designing songs that are far from one trick ponies, and this pair may be very best work yet.

Daisy Hicks has been showing all of us, from her hardcore fans to her sometimes unfairly skeptical critics, just how much talent her generation really does have to boast since getting into the recording industry a few years back. She’s devoted much of her life to pursuing this career, and you can hear her passion whenever she picks up a microphone, regardless of what the venue may be. Using a lyrical approach that emphasizes contrast above contrived symbolism and metaphors and music that is equally as provocative and non-traditionally constructed, she’s not just challenging the pop music narrative, she’s creating her own (and doing a pretty fine job I might add).

In singing from such an intimate place within herself in a song like “I Choose You,” she touches on a very transcendent moment for any artist of any genre of music; something that musicians of every generation have sought to achieve but very few ever had. She’s expressing herself and yet she’s teaching us a little about ourselves in the process, not only relating to us on a human level but transporting us into her position and allowing us to legitimately see what the world looks like from her point of view. The notion could be a little overwhelming for audiences more inclined to listen to a Katy Perry CD before they would Miles Davis, but those of us with a decent palate will recognize this for the gold that it really is.

“I Choose You,” and “Upside,” represent a very big moment in Daisy Hicks’ recording career and the first pair of major crossover jazz hits for any international artist in well over a decade, and in my personal opinion have elevated Hicks from her modest fame which was relatively confined to Europe and brought her into the big leagues with zeal. If 2018 has been disappointing you so far with the massive wave of sound-alike rappers, neo-hipster poets and singer/songwriters who have to feign anger and disdain at governments and their leaders to get any real attention, Daisy Hicks might just be the woman that you need to see, or rather listen to, this summer.
